Clinicopathological evaluation of pancreatic lesions from 2001-2012 in Shahid Sadoughi & Mortaz general hospital abstract

Introduction: This study was designed to define the clinicopathological characteristics ofpancreatic tumors and summarize the radiological and clinical findings and the surgicaltherapy strategy for these tumors.Materials and Methods :This prospective cross-sectional study was performed on patientshospital folders whom came to pathologic wards for benign and malignant pancreatic lesionsin Shahid Sadughi and Mortaz hospitals of Yazd , Iran, during 2001-2012 .One hundredseventy seven patients were enrolled into this study and data were gathered concerning age,sex, region, clinical findings and surgery report. All their information was collected inquestionnaire, analyzed with SPSS software and conclusion is stated in the tables.Results :Among the total 177 patients ,the most common benign lesions was inflammatorylesions (76.7%) and most common malignant ones was adenocarcinoma (75.2%) . The peakincidence of benign and malignant lesions was > 60 years. Malignant lesions were common inmen (51.3%) and benign lesions were common in women (55%). Malignant and benignpancreatic lesions are common in Head of pancreas & Ampulla of vater (72.6%, 51.7%).Themost common clinical findings in al benign lesions (78.3%) and the malignant ones (69.2%)was abdominal pain. Laparatomy & biopsy is the most common surgery in benign (53.3%)and malignant (37.6%) lesions.Conclusion: The findings are close to other centers’ results. In combination with clinicalfindings, radiological features of pancreatic tumors may help to make correct diagnosis. Theearlier the diagnosis is, the better the prognosis will be.
