The relationship between precipitation and NDVI on Golestan, Iran abstract

Vegetation and its production have a robust role in the economy and social affairs and also vegetation coverage change is a very important indication of the ecological environment change in every country. Rainfall vacillation is a natural event that its reduction during time can conduce the severity of the drought and drought can affect the density of vegetation in each area. The aim of this study is the calculated of correlation between precipitation and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for Golestan province. For this purpose the precipitation maps were obtained based on precipitation data of Golestan Province and NDVI maps were obtained based on MODIS images. In this study, spatial responses of NDVI to precipitation during 2000-2016 were examined. In this study the changes of precipitation and NDVI and also the correlation coefficients between these parameters were calculated for each pixel in ArcMap 10.3. The results showed that there is a significant and strong positive relationship between NDVI and rainfall in the rangeland and drylands with medium density vegetation cover in the north and northeast part of the study area, and also the effect of rainfall on vegetation was little in the forest with high density vegetation cover in the south and southwest part of the study area.
