Abstract:
Background and Aim: Melissa officinalis (MO) is a medicinal herb widely used in traditional medicine. Also, new research has demonstrated its beneficial effects of its treatment. The aim of this study is to achieve the effect of MO on liver function, oxidative stress, lipid profile, and some of other blood parameters. Methods: Data were collected by searching databases that published on the websites of Cochrane, Scopus, PubMed, Science Direct, ISI Web Of Science, Magiran, SID, and finally Google Scholar. Clinical trials were searched the online websites up to March 2016 to identify related trials. As study eligibility criteria, original articles of clinical trial research were chosen. Jadad score for Quality assessment and Begg’s and Egger tests for publication bias were applied. Results: The results of the meta-analysis of ten clinical trials suggests that consumption of MO has tendency to reduce the concentration of reduction in the concentration of ALT (mean difference (MD) = -0.57; 95% confidence interval [CI]= -1.05 to -0.09; P = 0.021), AST (MD = -0.69; 95% CI= -1.29 to -0.08; P = 0.026), ALP (MD = -0.35; 95% CI= -0.61 to -0.09; P = 0.008), MPO (MD = -0.38; 95% CI= -0.56 to -0.20; P < 0.001), LPO (MD = -0.67; 95% CI= -1.21 to -0.12; P = 0.016) and significant increase in TAC (MD = 0.68; 95% CI= 0.40 to 0.96; P < 0.001).Conclusion: Consumption of MO is probably effective in reducing oxidative stress and improving liver function. Nevertheless, it is required more research in this area to achieve definitive results.
