Abstract:

Background and Aim: According to growing prevalence of obesity in recent years and its effects on mental health and self-steem and the fact that individuals with healthier mental status have better physical and social function, this study has designed to investigate the relationship between BMI and mental health, self-esteem and eating disorders of ahwaz city adult population in 1397. Methods: 100 subjects had selected in a random model from ahwaz adult population and were investigated in a descriptive, cross-sectional study. To evaluate their BMI, weight and height have measured by the researcher, data were gathered by GHQ28 and EAT26 standard questionnaires and Rosenburg self-esteem test and findings were analyzed with SPPS-VERSION20.Results: The data indicated a significant indirect relationship between BMI and mental health (p=-0/659) and self-esteem (p=-0/309) and significant direct relationship between BMI and eating disorders (p=0/450).Conclusion: Regarding to a significant indirect relationship between BMI and mental health and self-esteem and significant direct relationship between BMI and eating disorders, having a standard BMI could increase the chance of growing self-esteem and mental health and decreasing eating disorders in adults.
