Abstract:
Background and Aim: Vaspin is a protein secreted by adipose tissue, which is involved in the regulation of glucose metabolism, lipid catabolism, increased insulin sensitivity and weight loss. This study investigated the levels of serum vaspin in diabetic patients compared to controls. Methods: 40 diabetic patients and 40 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Anthropometric parameters including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist to height ratio (WHtR) were measured .Serum levels of vaspin, fasting blood sugar (FBS) were measured in both groups. Results: Higher levels of vaspin was observed in diabetic patients than in the controls (P<0.0001).In multivariate regression analyze adjusted for age and BMI, serum vaspin levels were positively correlated with WC, WHtR and duration of diabetes. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the central obesity had the highest relationship with vaspin levels in diabetic patients and the need to it control in these patients.
