Water Intensity Evidence from Manufacturing Industries in Iran during the Third Development Plan: 2000-2004

Water resource management has become an important operational and environmental issue during the last three decades. Knowledge of the internal renewable water resources of a country and determining water intensive sectors are strategic information which is needed for long-term planning of a nation’s water. Nevertheless, there is no evidence that shows water intensive sectors based on province. Also, large increases in industrial water demand with very little recharge have strained Iran’s ground water resources resulting in serious decline in water level and quality. So, this study seeks to appear the water intensive industries in each Iran provinces based on ISIC codes and determines that which provinces have to move toward decreasing or increasing water intensive industries. Our data was gathered from 10031 manufacturing enterprises that have been obtained from General Census of Manufacturing and Mines in Iran (GCMM). The paper results offer practical guidance that can be used by politician to facilitate locating of industries in Iran provinces.
