Differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetric determination of 2-methyl-4,6-dinitrophenol at a Bismuth bulk electrode abstract

2-methyl-4,6-dinitrophenol (MDNP) is used as an insecticide, acaricide, and fungicide [1]. It is produced commercially and belongs to the class of manufactured chemicals that do not occur naturally in the environment [2]. As, the determination of MDNP is important, some electrochemical methods were used to analyze this compound due to their advantages including fast, sensitive, reproducible, and cost-effective properties [3,4]. In this study, a bismuth bulk electrode (BBE) was employed for differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetric (DPASV) measurement of MNDP. At optimal conditions for the determination, differential pulse voltammograms (DPVs) were recorded from –0.70 to –1.30 V in Britton-Robinson (BR) buffer solution (pH=12.0). The well-developed DPV peak for MDNP was achieved at pH 12.0, whereas accumulation potential and accumulation time were optimized at –0.7 V and 30 s, respectively. For better reproducibility regeneration of BiBE surface was carried out by alternative application of potential 100 mV for 0.1 s and potential –1300 mV for 0.1 s for 150 times. The limits of quantification (LOQ) and the limit of detection (LOD) in a BR buffer solution (pH 12.0) were 1.5 and 0.45 μM, respectively. Thus, it was confirmed that bismuth bulk electrode as a suitable non-toxic and environmentally friendly alternative to mercury electrodes can be successfully applied for the determination of trace amounts of MDNP in tap water as real sample. The other advantages of BBE can be easy preparation and handling, inexpensive, rapid screening, good mechanical stability and compatibility with the concept of green analytical chemistry purposes.
