Abstract:

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer among women. Receptors on breast cells and cancer-inducing genes are agents that stimulate cancer cells. Estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) are two receptors commonly seen on cancer cells. Potential markers for its diagnose and prognosis are of important value.MicroRNAs (miRs) are non-coding and single-stranded RNAs with 18-25 nucleotides long. It has been shown that miRs play a role in many cancers. In this study, was measured the expression of miR-155 in the serum of patients with BC in terms of ER and PR positive or negative. Methods: This case-control study was performed on 36 women with breast cancer in Reza Radiotherapy and Oncology Center (RROC). After RNA extraction from the patient’s serum, cDNA was synthetized. The expression of miR-155 was measured using real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and data were analyzed by SPSS software. Results The findings of this study revealed a significative relationship between miR-155 expression in PR positive versus negative with BC (P=0.001). However, there was no significant difference between miR-155 expression in ER (P=0.34 ) Conclusion: The relationship between miR-155 and ER and PR status indicates the role of miR-155 in the classification of breast cancer disease. Overexpression of miR-155 in PR-positive indicates that not only a marker for prognosis breast cancer, but that it could also present an attractive target for therapeutic intervention.
