Abstract:

Radiographic images are highly used in dentistry. Given the needs of dentists and special procedures on dental images, extraction and separation of teeth and identification of the missing teeth in images, especially in digital bitewing images, are necessary. Therefore, the upper and lower jaw mechanisms were explained in this research for extraction of teeth from jaws using bitewing images. To separate the teeth, a program was proposed using the adaptive window technique for determining and identifying teeth fissures and increasing precision and accuracy of results. In the proposed method, first, special algorithms are used to separate jaws by sum using an adaptive window. After obtaining the separation curves and the interval between the teeth, the teeth were separated from one another. Finally, using the sum feature, the positions of the missing teeth, which play a significant role in teeth marking, were identified in the jaw. The teeth are separated from the jaw in the digital bitewing images to obtain a view of a single tooth for further dental examinations and diagnosis of caries using image-processing techniques.Results of application of this method to bitewing images revealed improved quality and precision of the results ascompared to conventional methods of extracting teeth from the jaw and finding the missing teeth.
