BIM and its implementation in construction projects abstract

Recently, Building information modelling (BIM) have received widespread attention in the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) industries. Building Information Modelling is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a project. It is a shared knowledge resource for information about a project, forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life cycle, from earliest conception to demolition. BIM is able to provide faster and more effective communication of information between members of various parts of the project (architects engineers, surveyors, project managers and owner’s facilities managers, constructor’s sub-contractors . . .). It helps architects, engineers and constructors to visualize what is to be built in simulated environment and to identify potential design, construction or operational issues. However, the experimental impact of BIM in construction industry has yet to be checked. In this paper, we explore the interaction between BIM and the construction industry during its implementation, with a specific focus on the experimental impacts of BIM on the design and construction processes and professional roles during the process. Also, the benefits of Building Information Modeling and various BIM related risks and future challenges for the AEC industries are discussed.
