Association between emergency caesareans and risk of postnatal depression abstract
Postnatal depression(PND)is the most important mood disorder after delivery, which can be accompanied by mother-child and family relationship disorders. The numbers of C-sections performed world-wide have increased dramatically in many developed countries over the past few decades so as a result finding association between caesarean especially emergency one and PND is important. Methods Our article is based on about20studies from sciencedirect, journal of psychosomatic medicine and wily-online-library,which did meta-analysis or asked mothers to complete the Edinburgh-Postnatal-Depression-Scale(EPDS).Results The findings showed that the amount of effect size in term of Cohen d)of delivery mode on PND was0/30(P<0.001).The analysis of PND indicated that women with emergency delivery had a relative risk of1.81compared with women with non‐emergency delivery. The pooled ORs of PND were1.15(95%CI:0.92–1.43)for elective cesarean section(ElCS)and1.47(95%CI:1.33–1.62)for emergency cesarean section(EmCS).Conclusion As a conclusion, women having EmCS had about twice the risk of PND. Message for policymakers This has important implications for public health policy, with new mothers who give birth this way in need of increased support. The effects of PND can be far reaching, with previous studies suggesting that it can have a negative effect, not just on the health of the mother and her relationships with her partner and family members, but also on the baby s development.Mothers who experience PND are also less likely to go on to have more children so special attention to this group appears warranted.
