A ten year report of storage mediums for avulsed teeth: A systematic review

Abstract:

Background and Objective: Avulsion is the complete displacement of the tooth from the alveol . immediate replantation is the ideal treatment for an avulsed tooth , however , it is not always possible . maintaining the tooth in an adequate wet medium that can preserve the vitality of periodontal ligament cells is the key to success of replantation . The purpose of this study was to report on the type of different storage mediums .Search Method: Using the keywords storage medium , tooth avulsion , tooth replantation , milk , HBSS (Hanks balanced salt solution) and propolis ,databases PubMed , Science Direct , clinical key were searched . for research articles , reviews of literature and laboratory studies involving cell counting in human teeth in different substances which had been published in English between 2009-2019 .Papers without an abstract and those that evaluated pulp cell viability and root surface treatment were excluded . from 170 papers , 20 article were selected and reviewed for comparison of the outcomes .Finding: The finding showed a variety of storage mediums for avulsed tooth before replantation .According to the physiologic pH , Osmolality and Nutrients , HBSS (Hanks balanced salt solution) , milk , viaspan , Euro Collin , Minimum essential medium ( MEM) and green tea showed excellent efficacy .Egg white and coconut water showed good efficacy but saline , water and saliva had poor outcomes .At all it is preferable to use even water or saline as a storage medium rather than keep the tooth in dry conditions .Taking together , the characteristics , efficacy and availability ; milk appears as the best indication of a temporary storage medium for avulsed teeth before replantation .Conclusion: As we know according to characteristics and ease of access there is not a single product that possesses all the characteristics as the ideal storage medium for avulsed teeth , but with regard to ease of access and having physiologic PH , and osmolality milk is the best storage medium
