Abstract:
The aim of current paper is the experimentally study of color and covering gas effects on depth of laser beam penetration on poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA). In order to reach this purpose, first design of experiment (DOE) was done by considering the color (two types-transparent and black PMMA sheets), covering gas (without covering gas and compressed air) laser power (in 3 levels) and cutting velocity (in 3levels) as the variable input parameter. After that the kerfs were cut on sheets in different laser condition according to DOE. For investigation of generated kerfs the optical microscope (OM) was used. The findings show that the color and surface shine are an effective parameter on the depth of laser penetration. Increasing of depth of penetration by using compressed air as covering gas is another significant result. The results also prove that laser penetration decreases by reduction of power and increasing of cutting velocity. Analysis of variance of results makes clear the cutting velocity is the most effective parameter on depth of kerf. It also showed the covering gas is the more important in comparison with color of samples.
