Abstract:
The vertical impact of an axisymmetric liquid jet on a horizontal and solid surface which leads to the formation of a circular hydraulic jump (CHJ) is numerically simulated in this study by using the Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method. This numerical method is shown to be capable of simulating the hydraulic jump. The numerical results of the dependence of jump radius on the volumetric flow rate are confirmed by the experimental observations. Also the numerical results are compared with the only available theory for CHJ and the reversed flow in the jump is captured by the numerical simulation. The effect of downstream height, which is a very important factor in CHJ, is also studied in this paper and the results show that increasing this height will reduce the radius of the jump.
