Abstract:
With increasing of human development and expansion of life, people spend more time at homes, offices, restaurants, hotels, or other indoor environments. On the other hand, the adults, children, and patients, which are among the vulnerable groups, spend the most time in such environments. The main pollutants in confined spaces are suspended particles and gases. As a practical and cost-effective method for air purification, plants can be used to remove benzene, toluene, xylene and formaldehyde. Plants, in addition to air purification, play an important role as aesthetic, psychological and relaxing elements of indoor environment. Additionally, the use of plants helps reduce energy consumption and reduces consumption of electricity. In addition to plants, mechanical systems for air purification and ventilation could be used. To remove suspended particles, mechanical filters and air cleaners might be used as well. Adsorption systems can also be used to remove gaseous contaminants. The most prominent applications used in various systems include filtration, adsorption, and oxidation of photo catalyst. Life style and culture also affect the type of pollutants and their extent. The amount of pollutants can usually be minimized by proper arrangement of home and office appliances. Meanwhile, An Occupational therapist can make a valuable contribution in evaluating the environment of offices and proposing ergonomic suggestions for individuals who work in closed spaces
