Abstract:

The chemical reduction of a silver salt by a reducing agent is the most common method forsynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Chemical reducing agents may be associated withbiological hazards or environmental toxicity. Therefore, there is growing interest to developgreen methods for synthesis of AgNPs. Many reports are available on the biosynthesis ofAgNPs using plants [1, 2]. Grape leaf is traditionally used as a cuisine, colorant in textile naturaldyeing to obtain yellow shades and in indigenous medicine, grape leaves are used to stopbleeding, inflammation, and pain. Grape leaves contain high phenolic compounds [3]. In thisstudy, the grape leaf extract solution was used to synthesize AgNPs. The tentative mechanismof AgNPs synthesis in the presence of polyphenols is illustrated in Figure 1. The formation ofAgNPs was followed by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy. The shape and size of biosynthesizedAgNPs were considered by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The stability ofsilver nanoparticles was investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The antibacterial efficiency of AgNPs against Escherichia coli was investigated. In thepresence of grape leaf extract; the nanoparticles showed stability at least for one week andexhibited excellent antibacterial activity.
