Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of teaching conversational strategies through video clips among senior high school students. The participants of this study were 100 students who were selected out of 150 students of the third grade of Shohada high school and Hazrat Fatemh high school in Ahvaz. The material used in the curriculum for the experimental and the control groups was Top Notch 1A and 1B written by Joan Saslow and Allen Asher (2007). A homogeneity test was used to determine the students’ homogeneity level. The test included 50 multiple-choice items and they were supposed to answer items in 60 minutes. The reliability of this test was computed through Kuder-Richardson-21 formula as (r = 0.73). Furthermore, a checklist (Hughes, 2003) was used in both pre and post tests to measure communicative abilities of them. Data were analyzed through independent and paired samples t-test employed to see if there was any significant differences between the control and experimental groups regarding their speaking skill. The results showed that the experimental group of high achiever significantly performed better than other groups. Implications suggest the findings of this research that the video clips can be used in conversational classes to develop speaking skill among high achievers rather than low achievers.
