The Correlation of Topology Awareness, Message Delivery Efficiency and Redundant Traffic in P2P Networks abstract
In peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay networks, the mechanism of a peer randomly joining and leaving a network, causes a topology mismatch between the overlay and the underlying physical topology. This causes a large volume of redundant traffic in the underlying physical network as well as an extra delay in message delivery in the overlay network. In our previous work we introduced a metric called topology awareness parameter to evaluate the degree of matching between physical topology and overlay network. In this paper we show that there is a positive near linear correlation between the topology awareness parameter and efficiency of message delivery in P2P overlay networks in terms of latency and volume of redundant traffic in physical network.
