Abstract:

Corrosion of metals is a costly problem in many applications, especially in oilfields and marine environments. Also, coating durability, efficiency, and performance are typically insufficient for applications in aggressive and extreme environments. Corrosion inhibitors can act as self-healing repair agents, forming a protective layer over corrosive sites and preventing corrosion from occurring. Encapsulating corrosion inhibitors in micro- or nanoscale containers appears to be an effective method of improving corrosion resistance. Corrosion inhibitor carriers are capable of providing an effective and controlled on-demand release of corrosion inhibitors depending on different triggering processes (e.g. light, pH, temperature). This study provides an introduction to smart coatings and the advantages of using micro/nanocarriers to load corrosion inhibitors.
