The association between smoking and varicose veins in the working population of Bandar Abbas

Abstract:

Introduction: The aim of this cross sectional study was to determine the association between the pack years of smoking and the prevalence of varicose vein grades.Methods: The population of our study consisted of the working population of Bandar Abbas that attended the occupational medicine clinic of Shahid Mohammadi hospital. By non-random sampling, ۵۸۸ subjects were asked for the history of smoking and also examined for the varicose veins and their grades. Valid results from ۳۵۰ subjects were included in the study.Results: Seventeen subjects were smokers (۴.۸%). There were significant association between smoking and having varicose veins (P-Value=۰.۰۲۱). There were also borderline significant correlation between the grade of varicose veins and the pack years of smoking (P-Value=۰.۰۴۹).Conclusions: Considering the association between varicose veins and smoking, in the subjects that are reluctant to give up smoking, using other preventive methods like compression socks are advisable.
