Abstract:

Introduction: The prevalence of hookah use has shown a rapidly increasing trend for a variety of reasons in recent years, and increasingly makes young individuals to more often get together and spend their free time. Therefore, considering the harmful side effects of hookah consumption, this study was carried out to determine the prevalence and pattern of hookah use among nursing students of Bandar Abbas nursing school in ۲۰۱۸.Method: A total of ۳۲۴ nursing students were recruited into this cross-sectional study. sampling was performed using multistage sampling. Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire. Data were analyzed by IBM SPSS version ۱۶.۰.Results: The mean age of the participants was ۲۲.۹۸±۳.۱۹ years. Of ۳۲۴ selected subjects, ۶۹% were males and ۲۹% were females. About ۴۱% of the participants reported history of hookah smoking during their lifetime. The mean age at hookah smoking initiation was ۱۷.۲۳±۳.۶۲. moreover, ۷۷.۷% of the respondents reported no hookah smoking over the past month, ۱۷.۶% reported hookah use one to three times a month, ۲.۸% displayed consumption one to five times a week, and ۱.۲% reported daily use of hookah. Results of this study also show that gender, marital status, maternal education, parental living status, economic and cultural status were significantly associated with hookah use (P-Value<۰.۰۵).Conclusions: the findings of this study suggest a relatively high prevalence of smoking among nursing students of Bandar Abbas city. Given factors associated with hookah smoking among these individuals, we suggest that appropriate training and prevention interventions should be established for these individuals.
