Abstract:

Analysis of crashworthy structures has been a primary area of interest for many researchers for quite a few years now. The quest for a better energy absorbing structure or a better crashworthy structure has led researchers to carry out various analysis procedures experimentally and by simulating the characteristics. In this paper, the design spectrum for a longitudinal member is further analyzed and a set of design requirements is formulated. With the aid of Finite Element Method (FEM) models of several longitudinal cross-sections, numerical simulations have been executed to evaluate the influence of the design parameters on the crash behavior. Based upon the results of these simulations, an advanced geometric form for a longitudinal member is presented. The numerical crash analyses of tubes were performed using the standard and explicit finite element code ABAQUS/CAE. Finite element results consist of load displacement and specific energy absorption diagrams.
