Overweight Prevention and Treatment

Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. In ۲۰۰۸, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that ۱.۴ billion adults worldwide were overweight; of these, ۲۰۰ million men and ۳۰۰ million women were obese. It is predicted that more than one billion people in the world will be obese by ۲۰۳۰. Obesity is a major cause for the development of debilitating conditions such as type ۲ diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, all of which reduce life quality as well as lifespan. Obesity affects more people worldwide than any other debilitating disease. Wild-type lean C۵۷BL/۶J mice were placed on ۶۰kcal% High Fat Diet (HFD;Research Diets) at the age of three weeks soon after weaning, and maintained on the same diet for۱۶-۲۰ weeks before the experiments. Injection of DMSO (as a control group) and Firategrast (۴mg/kg) Intraperitoneally every day. Firategrast blocks reduction of energy expenditure, and leads to up to weight loss in High Fat diet induced obese (DIO) mice. Overall, Firategrast may be used as a new tool in weight management due to its ability to reduce performance indicators.
