Abstract:

Background and Aim: Suicide is today known as one of the most important issues in healthcare andeven one of the major psychosocial health problems in many countriesaround the world. so the presentstudy aimed to investigate the prevalence rate of suicide attempts and its associated risk factors incases referred to Dr. Moaven Hospital,in the city of Sahneh.Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study examined all registeredsuicide attempt cases over the last six years (n=۱۰۵۹) at Dr. Moaven Hospital, Sahneh, Iran. The datawere accordingly collected via checklists completed by supervisors during referrals, and then analyzedusing the SPSS Statistics software package (version ۲۱).Results: The total number of the suicide attempts was ۱۰۵۹ cases, where in men had experiencedhigher rates of suicide attempts (۵۷.۴%) than women. The prevalence rate of such attempts was alsotwo times higher in urban areas and even more common in lower-socioeconomic-status households.Moreover, the most common means of suicide was taking pills (۷۹.۳%). There was also a statisticallysignificant relationship between employment (occupation) and marital status and suicide-attemptprevalence rates (p<۰.۰۵).Conclusion: prevalence rates are shaped by numerous factors, such as mental health status, family andliving conditions, financial problems, unemployment rate, and the like,the preventive control of suchfactors can significantly contribute to reducing the prevalence rates of such acts. Therefore, it isrecommended to take account of this significant social phenomenon and implement prevention andcontrol programsto this end.
