Abstract:
Morphine is an important drug in hospitals. However, euphoric effects of morphine can lead to abuseof it and addiction to the important alkaloid. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect ofhydro-alcoholic extract of sage (Saliva officinalis) on the euphoric effects of morphine. Twelvegroups of female mice (n=۸) were used for the experiments. A conditioned place preference (CPP)method was used to investigate the euphoric effects of morphine and sage. Subcutaneousadministration of morphine (۰, ۵, ۱۰ and ۱۵ mg/kg) induced a conditioned place preference inlaboratory mice. Intraperitoneal administration of sage extract (۰, ۵۰, ۱۰۰ and ۱۵۰ mg/kg) had nosignificant effect on the induction of conditioned place preference. Administration of sage extractone hour before the start of the test failed to change the expression of the conditioned place preferenceof the effective dose of morphine; despite this, the high dose of the plant extract (۱۵۰ mg/kg)decreased the locomotor activity in the animals. As a result, hydro-ethanolic extract of sage has nosignificant effect on the expression of conditioned place preference caused by morphine.
