Effects of the Secondary Metabolite Quercetin on the Reproductive System: An Overview abstract

Quercetin is a natural compound and a bioactive flavonoid that possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The current study aimed to summarize the effects of quercetin on the male and female reproductive system. In this review, the authors searched the English electronic resources published by different researchers in the Google Scholar electronic database using the keywords quercetin, reproductive system, ovary, and testis. Findings of this review suggest that quercetin may ameliorate oxidative stress and inflammation in the testis and ovary but, its effects on uterus contraction isn’t clear. Also, it has been shown that it relaxes the smooth muscle of pig uterus. Further clinical and experimental studies about the effects of this natural substance on the reproductive system and diseases are needed.
