Treatment methods of industrial effluents containing hydrocarbons - A review

The purpose of this study is to review the researches conducted in the field of petroleum wastewater treatment and briefly mention the technologies used in this field. Petrochemical industry is a collection of liquid effluents containing large amounts of priority compounds, especially petroleum hydrocarbons along with cycloalkanes and aromatic compounds. Considering the dangers that petroleum wastes have for the environment and living organisms, the treatment of these wastes is of particular importance. Treatment of petroleum wastewater can be done using physical, chemical and biological processes. The use of CSTRs is one of the common methods in the treatment of petroleum wastes, which has a good performance in the field of removing hydrocarbons. In this study, COD, BOD and BOD۵ parameters have been investigated to check the performance of different purification methods.
