Classification of Urban Infrastructure Components based on their Interdependencies with a focus on Community Resilience abstract

In modern society, critical infrastructure play a key role in people's life. Thus, understanding their interdependencies and interconnection is essential to assess the performance of the urban infrastructure systems during and following a disruptive event, which lays the foundation for assessing community resilience. The occurrence of natural disasters such as earthquakes in the last few decades has influenced infrastructure’s performance and reduced their functionality level. Moreover, the prevalence of aging infrastructure and increased cascading failures because of infrastructure interaction have highlighted the need for more resilient infrastructure. This study tries to prioritize the importance of urban infrastructure systems based on their effects on other systems. Infrastructure systems which are highly dependent on other systems are differentiated from those that are less reliant. This classification can help researchers in the area of resilience to focus their studies on the bottlenecks of the urban infrastructure network.
