Abstract:

In this paper, the progressive collapse behavior of a hybrid cable dome has been investigated. The hybrid system consists of a tensegrity ring in boundary region and a levy cable dome in central part. A hybrid cable dome and a traditional one (with rigid ring) were considered in this paper. Effects of the sudden loss of members for two studied structures were evaluated using dynamic alternate path analyses in finite element ABAQUS software. For this purpose, members are divided into some groups based on their geometric location. In each time, one member of each group was removed suddenly and dynamic analysis was carried out on the damaged structure. Occurrence of progressive collapse indicate that the removed member is critical and there is no alternate path to redistribution of force. Results showed that removal of the lower hoop cables results in progressive collapse. Also, presence of tensegrity ring in boundary region provide alternate paths for removing of boundary members of levy cable dome. After detecting critical members, the sufficient alternate paths and a progressive collapse resistant design were introduced using force limiting devices or adding new members
