Bearing capacity of strip footings on rock containing preexistingfault abstract
In this study, the authors investigated the bearing capacity of strip footings placed on a rock bed under theinfluence of faults using finite element limit analysis. It was assumed that the rock mass followed the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The bearing capacity of the footing was determined for various values of mi, GSI,and uniaxial compressive strength of the intact rock, both with and without fault conditions. The resultsobtained from the present research revealed that the creation of a fault led to a decrease in the bearingcapacity of the strip footing. The most significant decrease occurred when the fault intersected the left andright edges of the footing. Furthermore, it was observed that the slope (dip) of the fault, relative to thehorizon, exerted a substantial influence on the bearing capacity. Specifically, it was found that the bearingcapacity increased with an increase in the fault slope when the fault extent passed through the center of thefooting.
