Abstract:
Flash butt welding is commonly used in the manufacture of continuously welded rails. It is a resistance welding method, often performed in stationary plants, which consists of electrical heating and hydraulic forging of the rail ends. This types of welding methods introduce a similar residual stress field in the foot, the web and the head of the rail. This investigation performs an electro-thermo-mechanical analysis using finite element techniques to analyze residual stresses in two continuously welded rails, then we will compare the residual stresses with results of standard test method for determining residual stresses by the hole-drilling strain-gage method that have been published by ASTM to evaluate them and we found the fine results.
