Antioxidant activity of Sambacus ebulus (Adoxaceae) from Iran abstract
Sambucus ebulus (Adoxaceae) is one of the most important medicinal plants and is native to southern and central Europe, northern Africa and western Asia. This study investigated the phytochemistry of 12 populations of this species in northern Iran. Phytochemical assessment including antioxidant activity was performed using DPPH method and statistically analyzed. The highest amount of antioxidants was found in the fruiting organ and the lowest in the tree, andof these metabolites in each organ were almost the same at different levels in all three regions. The trends of these metabolites were different in fruit and tree at different altitudes, but antioxidant content in leaves decreased with increasing altitude. Overall, the phytochemical results indicated that plant extracts, especially leaves and seeds, could be a source of antioxidants
