Abstract:

The present study investigated the effects of text modification on EFL learners' incidental vocabulary acquisition. Thirty Iranian students of English took part in this study. Two modified versions (i.e. simplification & elaboration) of an English passage plus the baseline version were given to the subjects who had already been divided accordingly into three groups. They were asked to read the texts and to be ready for an exam to be taken two weeks later. Two weeks later, a seven-item multiple choice test was administrated. The results indicated that those who had read the elaborated text had scored the least whereas the scores of the readers of the baseline and simplified text were the highest with a slight superiority of the scores of the former group.
