Software-Based Implementation of ADS-B Air Traffic Surveillance System abstract
As air traffic is increasing steadily every year, there is an obvious need to ensure that safety and efficiency standards of the current airborne systems are maintained, or even enhanced. To fulfill this demand, NextGen plan for the future of airspace management and control is proposed by aviation agencies. This plan relies on transforming Air Traffic Control (ATC) from a ground-based radar network to an aircraft and satellite-based system called Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast, ADS-B. In recent years, Software Defined Radio (SDR) has revolutionized the field of wireless communications by bringing much functionality as software hence reducing the cost of hardware maintenance and improving the performance of wireless systems. Considering limitations of current radar-based ATC systems such as increasing cost of installation and maintenance as well as safety issues in dense air traffic, SDR techniques are considered to design and implement an air traffic surveillance system based on ADS-B standard.
