Biomimicry, A Deeper Shade of Nature on Architecture abstract
This study looks specifically into biomimetic architecture and attempts to bring to light the history of thismovement; its influence, present day understanding, aims and significance within the built environment.Biomimicry, where flora, fauna or entire ecosystems are emulated as a basis for design, is a growing area of researchin the fields of architecture and engineering. Referring to the nature for answering this matter can be useful sincenature has tried its methods over the years. Many current approaches to environmentally sustainable architecture arebased on mitigation. The suggestion from the examples collected in this research is that it is possible to go furtherthan this, and for buildings and cities to be regenerative. The intention is therefore to transcend the mimicking ofnatural forms and attempt to understand the principles that lie behind those forms and systems. Through acomparative literature review, and an examination of existing biomimetic technologies, this paper elaborates ondistinct approaches to biomimetic design that have evolved, life’s principles and Biomimetic levels. At last aframework for understanding the various forms of biomimicry has been presented , and is used to discuss the distinctadvantages and disadvantages inherent in each as a design methodology. It is shown that these varied approachesmay lead to different outcomes in terms of overall sustainability or regenerative potential. This paper attempts toprovide an overview of the role imitation of life plays in architectural design.
