An overview on the effect of geosynthetics in flexible pavement to reduce reflective cracking abstract
Field evidences indicate that geosynthetic reinforcement is one of the techniques adopted to improve pavement performance. Methods of controlling reflective cracking include proper construction and curing of the stabilized base, reduction of crack size through the use of pre-cracking, and relief of stress concentrations through the use of geosynthetic in the pavement layer. Significant research has been recently conducted with the objectives of determining the governing mechanisms and relevant properties of geosynthetics that contribute to the enhanced performance of pavement systems and enabling the prediction of pavement performance depending on the various types of geosynthetics used. This paper aims to present and discuss the findings from some of the studies on utilizing geosynthetics in flexible pavements. Furthermore, three most common usages of geosynthetics, so called, fluid barrier, strain absorbing, and reinforcement agent in pavement structures are investigated in this paper.
