Designing unified power flow controller using genetic algorithm to improve power quality and transient stability in power system abstract

Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) technologies are the most advanced devices for power flow control in power system. Unified power flow controller (UPFC) is the multi-objective FACTS device for the control of power flow in transmission networks. UPFC is a power electronic based device that has the capability of controlling the power flow through the line by controlling appropriate its series and shunt parameter. In this paper UPFC has been placed in a typical power system and Genetic algorithm (GA) is used to define the control parameter for UPFC. When this device started its action, power system has transient fluctuations, by adjusting the suitable control parameter value for UPFC controller, these transient oscillations can be damped. Simulation results show the effectiveness and robustness of the power system when the UPFC comes into the network
