Abstract:

Aeluropus littoralis as a resistant plant, is capable of coping with stress conditions. The concentration of cytotoxic metabolit of methylglyoxal (MG), associated with several pathological conditions in animals and inhibition of growth and development in plants, reaches to dangerous levels under such circumstances. The glyoxalase system has been documented as a major pathway for detoxification of MG in living systems. The role of the glyoxalase system in salt tolerance of Aeluropus littoralis has not been yet reported; therefore in the present study, characterization of glyoxalase I (GLY I) gene, as one of the main factors causing stress tolerance in this halophyte, was investigated, using homology and structural analysis. Results from homology analysis demonstrated that the mentioned gene in A.littoralis had 94% identity with oryza sativa glyoxalase I gene; Setaria italica, Triticum aestivum and Hordeum vulgare had also good homology. Structure analysis showed that Al.gly I as a functional gene could be employed for transformation to other main and sensitive crops such as rice, wheat and barley.
