Investigating the Relationship between Forgiveness and Depression in Parents of Mentally-retarded and Normal Children abstract

the present research aims to investigate relationship between forgiveness and depression in parents of mentally retarded and normal children. Methods: the research design was after event (causal-comparative). 36 parents of mentally retarded children and 36 parents of normal children were selected by means of random sampling. Beck's depression questionnaire (DBI) and Enright's forgiveness index (EFI) were used for evaluation of research variables. After collection of raw scores, these data were statistically analyzed by means of correlation coefficient and t student test. The results showed that relationship between depression and parents' forgiveness was significant in normal and mentally retarded children parents. Moreover, the results showed that depression was significantly higher in parents of mentally retarded children while forgiveness was higher in parents of normal children. Conclusion: the researchers found that there is a significant negative relationship between depression and forgiveness in parents of mentally retarded and normal children
