Abstract:
The present paper analyses the linkage between business strategies and human resource management practices on the basis of an empirical research carried out in the Indian context. The research instruments encompass the different variants of business strategy and the various aspects of HRM practices. Based on a questionnaire survey, the relationship between business strategies and human resource management practices has been analysed from two different directions. The first one involves the establishment of the strategic HRM relationship by using factor analysis followed by regression analysis. The second one involves the concept of strategic proximities wherein the perspective of organisations following similar business strategies has been taken into consideration and the parallel relationship with HRM practices has been established empirically. In this exercise the concept of fit as highlighted in existing literature has been empirically substantiated. The results reveal the prevalence of relationship between business strategies and human resource management practices in certain situations
