Abstract:
Some ordinary merchant ships and vessels like pontoon barges are not designed to have any thrust-making machinery equipment or so called Engine . Also it is not possible for an engine vessels to have engine thrust force in all working conditions or even some kind of failure may cause the machinery shut down. Therefore one of the most significant operations for ships is the Towing Operation and thus relevant technical procedures are prepared, approved and are ready to use onboard. One of the critical points to note in preparing these procedures is the mechanical properties of wire ropes used in the Towing Operation. In this paper regarding the main dimensions of an assumed ordinary merchant vessel, the tension load on a towing wire rope during a towing operation is calculated using the Equipment Number determined by classification rules and a finite element model of a 7*7 steel wire rope is prepared using CAD and CAE software. Finally the results in terms of Von-Mises, normal stresses and the longitudinal strains are assessed and validated by theoretical results
