Abstract:
Friction stir processing (FSP) was used for the fabrication of AA 2024- AA 1050 multi-layer sheets of 5×5 mm2 area. AA 1050 alloy was used as the substrate and AA 2024 of 2 mmthickness was cladded on the surface by thermo-mechanical effect of FSP. Crossover multi pass FSP with 50% of overlap was considered as the cladding method. Effect of number of passes onthe microstructure and hardness of clad layers was evaluated. Microstructural evolutions wereinvestigated by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that FSP can result in a defect free clad layer and a uniform metallurgical interface between the clad layer and base material. Moreover, clad layers exhibited higher hardness values in comparison to the base material
