Abstract:
The north Atlantic presents the highest Anthropogenic Co2 (Cant) inventory of all the oceans because of deep water ventilation. Cant is up-taken by the ocean through the air-sea interface mainly in the subtropical north Atlantic before being advected into the sub-polar gyre. The objective of this research is twofold: 1. to quantify the variability of the transport of Cant (Tcant) at decadal time scale, and 2. to understand the mechanisms driving the Tcant variability. Moreover, we propose a simplified estimator that points out that the variability of Tcant depends on both, the intensity of the meridional overturning circulation and the increase of Cant in the ocean.
