Abstract:
The advantage of using polymerisable dyes over conventional dyes is that the dye becomes chemically bonded to the polymer. The dye therefore cannot be extracted from the polymer. The solvent-fastness of a polymer colored with a polymerisable dye is, as a consequence, much greater than a polymer colored with conventional dyes. Naphthalimide derivatives are of interest because of their use as colorants in the polymer industry, fluorescence probes for medical and biological purposes, light-emitting diodes, HIV drugs, fluorescence cell makers, DNA-cleaving agents, liquid-crystal additives and laser dyes. In this paper, a novel polymerisable N-allyl substituted 1,8- naphthalimide was synthesized. Acenaphthene as a starting material was converted to final dye through several chemical processes such as bromination, oxidation and imidation. The obtained dye and their corresponding intermediates were characterized by the use of elemental analysis, DSC, FTIR, 1HNMR, and UVvisible spectroscopic techniques.
