Abstract:
Numerical modeling of open channel flows has drawn the attention of researchers in the field of hydraulic engineering for predicting the behavior of relevant variables in practical situations. In the context of open channels transient flows, wide relevant problems are described by the Saint Venant equations (SVE). These transient flows are often accompanied by shock waves. In hydraulics, shock waves are referred to as hydraulic jumps, surges, or water hammer. The current study presents a numerical solution to Saint Venant equations with abrupt closure of the valve in an open channel. This numerical simulation is performed using the Mike 11 model. The results of the numerical simulation for various times after abrupt closure of the valve are presented and discussed in this paper. As a result, in a given position of the channel, the water depth variations are reduced over time to steady state is generated for the channel.
