Abstract:

This study has been conducted with the aim of investigating the phenomenon of language attrition in a Lori-dominated part of Iran, namely the city of Lordegan , in the Charmahal va Bakhtiyari Province. The total of 320 subjects were included in the study. The word ‘Lache’, which is a Lori word and means ‘a shabby and tatty footwear’, was used as the only thing whereby data was elicited from the subjects. The results indicate that there is a clear trend in this relation. Most young children who took part in the study were not familiar with the meaning of the word and it is something worrying. The fact that Persian is the official medium of instruction at school and is even used widely at home among Lori families can be considered as one of the factors contributing to the unfamiliarity of Lori children with words of their language. It is absolutely necessary for the present-day Lori adults to transfer their indigenous language to the today’s Lori children. Otherwise, the Lori language will be severely affected by the phenomenon of linguistic attrition in the future and its existence will be jeopardized
