Antibiotic Resistance Pattern of E.coli Isolated from Urine Culture in abstract

Objective: The resistance of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics has now raised an issueworldwide. As the E.coli is the most common cause of urinary tract and nosocomialinfections, the present study was designed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility ofE.coli in the urine culture of patients admitted to Imam Reza Hospital in Kermanshah.Material and Methods: For this descriptive study, a total of 101205urine samples wereexamined during a 6-years period(2006-2012). They were all cultured in EMB,BA,anddifferential madia , and then examined forE.coli. Antibiogram profile of the bacteria wasdetermined by disk-diffusion test (Kirby-Bauer) according to CLSI standards. Results: From 16366(16.17%) positive samples, 6676(40.8%) came out positive for E.coli.Based on the result ofantimicrobial testing resistance to Ampicillin, Co-trimoxazol , Nalidixicacid and Cefixime were 87.3%, 68.2%, 56.6%& 49.5% respectively. FurthermoreCiprofluxacin, Cefotaxim and Ceftriaxone had the highest sensitivity at 61.7%, 50.6%&53.9% respectively. Conclusion: Highest sensitivity was to Ciprofluxacin in this study. Also in clinical practice, itis the first antibiotic prescribed to treat urinary tract infection. In pediatric surgery,Ceftriaxone is a common treatment for which a high sensitivity was observed in this study. The highest resistance belongs to Amplicillin which explains why this drug is notrecommended to treat urinary tract infections.
