Effect of topical phenytoin in the prevention and treatment of acute radiation dermatitis abstract
Background:About 90 percent of patients who receive radiation therapy with moderate to severe skincomplications. These skin problems can be caused by prolonged course of therapy ortreatment. Due to the high incidence of radiation effects in cancerous patients, It had theeffect of phenytoin in the treatment of wounds caused by radiation to examine.Materials and Methods:This study is a case-control study of 70 patients who underwent mastectomy for breast cancerand control groups Have been referred for radiotherapy BABOLSAR martyr Rajai Hospital,were studied. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups of phenytoin ointment orplacebo ointment applied twice daily to the chest And at the end of every week duringradiotherapy and 2 weeks after completion of radiation-induced acute dermatitis Radiationtherapy was evaluated by an expert according to RTOG.Results:Dermatitis in the first week, second, third and fourth in the two groups was not statisticallydifferent (P> 0/05). Dermatitis in the fifth week of the study in both groups decreasedsignificantly (P <0/05).Conclusion:It seems that topical phenytoin on healing and prevention of radiation induced Matyt beeffective in patients with breast cancer.
