Abstract:

Background and Objective: Diabetes mellitus with different forms of dyslipidemia causes a wide range of cardiovascular diseases caused by disorders of fat metabolism. Regarding the role of HDL cholesterol in improving heart complications, it can be used as an important indicator in assessing serum lipids. Marjoram and fumaria plants due to flavonoid compounds have antioxidant effects and are important in dyslipidemia .so this study aimed to compare the effect of oral administration of Origanum vulgare and Fumaria officinalis on serum HDL-cholesterol in Diabetic Rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 48 adult male Wistar rats were allocated into six groups including: Control, OV-treated control, and FO- treated control, diabetic, OV- treated diabetic and FO-treated diabetic groups. For induction of diabetes, a single dose of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg, i.p.) was used .fumaria and Origanum powders were mixed in the ratio of 6.25 grams with standard rat chow for six weeks. Bloodletting a week after drug administration using capillary tubes was done in order to ensure diabetes. At the end of the treatment period, rats were anesthetized with ether and blood from the heart was taken. Blood samples obtained were Centrifuges at a frequency of 3000 rpm for 10 minutes. After separating the serum levels of HDL cholesterol was measured by relevant instructions. Quantitative data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Results: Fumaria treated control group significantly increased HDL cholesterol compared to the control group (p<0.01).also in the control group receiving marjoram a significant increase was seen compared to the control group but lesser than control group treated with fumaria. (p<0.05). a Non-significant decrease in HDL cholesterol in the diabetic group was obtained than the control group. And HDL cholesterol levels in the treated diabetic group with Fumaria significantly increased compared to the diabetic group (p> 0.05) while the treated diabetic group with marjoram had no such effect. conclusion : The results showed that administration of Fumaria officinalis in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats can increase serum HDL cholesterol levels favorably and significantly Which can be beneficial in improving cardiovascular complications of diabetes. While the administration of marjoram in diabetic rats causes a statistically non-significant difference in the level of HDL cholesterol.
