Risk Assessment in Urban Area A case study, Tehran Metropolis

Tehran, as one of the most populated capitals, experiences many natural hazards and unnatural disasters every day, which harm exposed people, properties and the environment. Thus conducting risk assessment, by analyzing potential hazards and evaluating existing conditions of vulnerability, has great importance to both the city and residents. The process of conducting a risk assessment is based on a review of both the technical features of hazards (such as their location, intensity, frequency and probability), and the analysis of the dimensions of vulnerability and exposure (physical, social, economic and environmental), while taking particular account of the coping capabilities pertinent to the risk scenarios. Considering the complications existing in urban areas and the urgent need to employ methods in order to reduce the risk in residential areas, the risk management as an effective method in anticipation and preparation for critical situations, has been employed in different ways. In this paper we implement a GIS-based fuzzy approach for risk assessment in one of the most populated municipality regions of Tehran
